The Calibration Laboratory is responsible for the calibration and verification of detectors for ionizing radiation and is involved in various research projects focusing on the development of calibration methodologies. The laboratory is equipped with X-ray, gamma and neutron irradiation facilities. The X-ray irradiation facility provides radiation quality corresponding to the narrow ISO 4037-1:1996 series (N series). The purpose of this project is to characterize the reference fields generated by the X-ray irradiation device in accordance with these ISO 4037-1 standards. For this purpose, spectrometric measurements of reference fields must be carried out. The spectrometric measurement will be performed with a semiconductor detector XR-100T from the AmpTek company (Bedford, Massachusetts, USA), based on cadmium telluride (CdTe). For spectrometric purposes, the XR-100T must first be calibrated using radionuclides with known gamma emissions. Calibrating the XR-100T will be a significant part of the internship, as setting the correct measurement parameters for the 15 to 300 keV energy range can be challenging. Once the XR-100T has been calibrated, spectrometric measurements of reference fields will be made for radiation qualities from N-15 to N-300. The challenge here is to determine the correct alignment of the XR-100T so that only gamma photons passing through the collimator are detected with the maximum intensity possible. The procedure, as well as the evaluation of the data and the results, must be documented in detail in a technical report. Your main task will be to perform X-ray measurements with an Amptek-type spectrometer and subsequent analysis of the resulting data. The work will be performed in the irradiation room. Project: Development and validation of HPGe-detector models for Monte Carlo simulations Operating particle accelerator facilities and nuclear installations is accompanied by ionizing radiation, which can occur during and after operation. This radiation can cover a wide range of energies and different types of particles. The gold standard for the measurement and characterization of gamma radiation are high-purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors. The quantitative analysis of the data measured with these detectors requires an energy and geometry dependent efficiency correction. This correction can be obtained using particle transport simulations based on Monte Carlo techniques. The accuracy of the corrections relies on a realistic geometry model of the measurement setup and the HPGe detector. In addition, experimental and theoretical validations are crucial to minimize systematic uncertainties. We seek a student who will - develop geometric models of HPGe-detectors and measurement setups - perform Monte Carlo simulations - perform measurements using HPGe-detectors - compare results with reference measurements and other methods | 2100 CHF Monthly | 8.4 daily, 42.0 weekly | Paul Scherrer Institut | Villigen PSI | www.psi.ch | Employer | 1750 CHF Monthly | 900 CHF Monthly | Students with any NON-EU/EFTA nationality need for the visa and work permit an official letter from their university, confirming that the internship is compulsory (IAESTE Switzerland will apply for them). We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2200 people. We are currently facing the problem of continuously increasing global emission of greenhouse gases and energy demand while depleting fossil feedstocks. Hence, it is indispensable to find efficient ways to mitigate these emissions. Although the atmospheric methane concentration is lower than that of CO2 (1.9 vs. 413.2 ppm in 2020), its global warming potential is 28-36 times higher, and hence, it severely contributes to proceeding global warming. [1,2] Thermocatalytic conversion of methane constitutes a promising approach as it converts two greenhouse gases into CO and hydrogen. However, the optimal catalyst is not yet found. It is important search for green catalysts, which contain only abundant and ideally non-toxic elements. For achieving this goal, it is indispensable to fundamentally understand structure-performance correlations of the catalysts to design next generation catalysts. Therefore, it is important to choose the appropriate characterization technique(s) and to perform the experiments under realistic working conditions. In this context, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) constitutes a powerful characterization tool as it yields element-specific information of the catalyst, but XAS is usually performed at synchrotron facilities. Recently, it became possible to perform XAS studies also in a laboratory, offering new possibilities for detailed catalyst characterization. [3,4] This internship will focus on the synthesis and subsequent characterization of catalysts for the conversion of CO2 and methane. For the catalyst characterization, the internship will comprise the further development of a laboratory-based XAS spectrometer to enable various reaction conditions, e.g., gas and temperature control, during thermocatalytic experiments combined with simultaneous product analysis. The hereby gained knowledge of the new catalysts will contribute to our journey towards a more circular society. [1] A. Abdulrasheed, A.A. Jalil et al., Renew. Sustain. This research will include the investigation of microplastic distribution in different biological samples. By incorporating these different aspects, this research aims to make a significant contribution to addressing the widespread problem of microplastic pollution and its potential impacts on ecosystems and human health. Goals: • Sample selection: One of the goals is to carefully select environmentally relevant microplastics during the initial phase. These microplastics, commonly found in natural environments, will include a variety of shapes, material compositions, and sizes that reflect typical ecological environments. • Fine tuning of LIBS and Raman spectroscopy parameters: The next phase involves the optimization of parameters for both LIBS and Raman spectroscopy. For LIBS, the optimization will include refining gate delays and irradiance settings. For Raman spectroscopy, the focus will be on refinement of laser power. • Data analysis and interpretation: Following the experiments, a thorough data analysis will be performed to interpret the LIBS and Raman spectroscopy results. In this step, the elemental compositions and structural variations of the different types of microplastics will be examined. • Integration and conclusion: In the final phase, the results of the LIBS and Raman spectroscopy experiments will be integrated to draw conclusions. | 15000 CZK Monthly | 8.0 daily, 40.0 weekly | Brno University of Technology Department: Central European Institute of Technology | Brno | http://libs.ceitec.cz/ | IAESTE | 11000 CZK Monthly | 5000 CZK Monthly | Please follow the instructions for preparing nomination documents and the visa process in the attached document. The overall aim of our research is helping to better understand biogeochemical cycles within agricultural and wetland ecosystems. Thereby, we want to find better ways to locally close nutrient cycles, secure soil fertility and thus food security as well as to mitigate global climate change by reducing GHG (CO2, CH4, N2O) emissions. To do so, we use a variety of greenhouse, laboratory and especially field study setups, employing a broad range of different methods such as e.g., closed chamber measurements (for detecting GHG emissions), handheld remote sensing (for NDVI, RVI, PRI, CI), incubation measurements (for N2, N2O, CH4 and CO2 emissions) and isotope tracer techniques. As a member of our team you will get the chance to work on different interesting topics, not only in the laboratory, but also on a number of field locations spread over North-East Germany, including inter-alia the Spreewald (Project: ICAW2) and Uckermark region (Project: WIN-N). Your tasks: • Help with organisation, conductance and evaluation of measurements at field trials • Help with the preparation and conductance of laboratory (incubation) and greenhouse experiments Field measurements are usually up to several days (e.g. after fertilization campaigns or before/after harvest) and thus including overnight stays at e.g. the ZALF Research Station. Recent projects are: 1.) "Krumensenke": the project is investigating the potential of simulated fractional deep tillage (mixing of subsoil material into the plough horizon) in combination with different fertilization form (mineral/organic) on an additional C and N storage in the soil. 2.) "WIN-N": within this joint project it is aimed to reduce environmental pollution and increase the nitrogen use efficiency when using synthetic Sulphur-containing N-fertilizers. 3.) "ICAW2": the project aims at improving precision and accuracy of process based models used to simulate the water and C cycle for shallow groundwater site. It is based on experimental studies under defined hydrological and geochemical boundary conditions during which a weighable groundwater lysimeter and manual chambers are combined. 4.) "rePRISING": the project (funded by BMEL) aims to decrease GHG emissions by focusing on the reuse of pineapple residue from a small-holder farm perspective. The project itself is a cooperation with the University of the Philippines, Los Baños, (field experiments), while at ZALF greenhouse and laboratory studies are performed. 5.) "Optimal-N": within this project it is aimed to develop predictive tools to support site specific crop N management for optimal delivery of ecosystem services related to N. For this we perform measurements of GHG fluxes and respective crop development along a number of transect within six different crops. Additionally, it's recognized that hibernation increases radioresistance, thereby suppressing tumor development. Consequently, space radiation scientists are researching how hibernation functions and its potential application to non-hibernators or humans, as it could serve as an effective tool for protecting space travelers from radiation. We have successfully induced synthetic torpor in non-hibernating rats using an adenosine agonist and observed its radiation protection effects. In our ongoing project, our aim is to prolong the duration of synthetic torpor. Therefore, it's crucial to determine a safe period for inducing synthetic torpor using the adenosine agonist. Moreover, since radiation is utilized in cancer therapy, we intend to induce synthetic torpor using various adenosine agonists on a mouse model with tumors. The objective is to comprehend how hibernation influences tumor development and to determine a treatment schedule that can eliminate the tumor while preserving healthy tissue. SHIPTRAP focusses on the investigation of the nuclear structure evolution far from stability and is addressing the properties of heavy and superheavy elements in particular. The heaviest elements owe their existence to nuclear shell effects in a subtle balance of the Coulomb interaction and the strong interaction. They often feature a distinct nuclear structure and often isomeric states at low excitation energies occur. Mass spectrometry is a powerful method to reveal the nuclear structure evolution and identify nuclear isomers even for nuclides with lowest production rates. Based on pioneering measurements on No and Lr isotopes at SHIPTRAP technical and methodical developments are under way to extend the reach of Penning trap mass spectrometry towards heavier and more exotic nuclides. These developments aim at reaching higher precision, higher mass resolving power and ultimate sensitivity. The phase-imaging technique PI-ICR that has recently been developed at SHIPTRAP provides significantly enhanced mass resolving power. Another ongoing development is related to the development of single-ion mass measurement methods, for example by electronic detection techniques. The intern will participate in the development activities as well as in measurement campaigns. The work will be carried out at the GSI in the SHE physics department at GSI. Ecuador has the commitment to achieve a total decarbonization of the islands by 2050, where the main effort is focused on a significant, gradual and expansive change in the energy matrix towards the use of renewable energy sources. This proposal aims to contribute in planning the clean and sustainable energy supply on Galapagos Islands, focusing on three key factors: (a) Develop a techno-economic model to include the wind generation (off/on-shore) into the simulation tool developed in a previous USFQ’s project (which only considered solar generation) and re-evaluate the long-term analysis of the energy matrix for a solar-wind-ESS based one. (b) Map the specific locations to install solar and wind plants (distributed generation grid) considering territorial planning criteria and environmental impact assessment, and (c) develop a short-term simulation-based analysis to evaluate the optimal operation (energy management proposal) of the power plants and energy storage systems. JOB DESCRIPTION 1. Collaborate in the develop a techno-economic model to include the wind generation (off-shore, on-shore) into the simulation tool previously developed and re-evaluate the long-term analysis of the energy matrix in Galápagos for a solar-wind-ESS based one. 2. Map the specific locations to install solar and wind plants (distributed generation grid) considering territorial planning criteria and environmental impact assessment of the islands (case study: San Cristobal). It is worth to mention that for this objective, we currently count with 3 local students of the Environmental Management program studying in the San Cristobal´s campus who are working in their final projects aligned with this proposal (map of the geographical locations to install power plants, development of a methodology to measure the environmental impact of each possible location and baseline study for the waste management from lithium batteries that will be installed as energy storage systems. 3. Develop a short-term simulation-based analysis to evaluate the optimal operation (energy management proposal) of the power plants and energy storage systems considering different factors such as: power/energy demand, energy surplus from the power plants, gradual integration of electric vehicles (land and maritime), stability of the electrical grid. At the end of September 2024 an event will be organized in Galapagos about the project, the student can collaborate in the event. Companies, such as Caterpillar, Cummins, Boeing, Airbus, among others, are interested in standardized procedures for quality control of coating products developed by spray shops all over the world. Similarly, in Ecuador, hydropower plants, Oil&Gas and mining industries demand the implementation of certified procedures to assure reliability on their applications. This demands the utilization of structural materials of enhanced tolerance to mechanical or chemical damage (wear/erosion or corrosion). In particular, thermal sprayed (TS) coatings allow to reinforce surfaces with dense and hard coatings with minimal heating effects during processing and high adhesion strength. In this project, we use additive manufacturing techniques (HVOF, high-velocity-oxygen-fuel) to deposit overlays of WC-Co with 9%Co, 12%Co and 17%Co over gray cast iron substrates. One sample of each composition will be mounted in epoxy resin and polished to determine the microstructure of the coating, hardness and stress-strain curves. The microstructure characterization includes SEM, EDS and XRD analysis. On the other hand, both microhardness and stress-strain curves of coatings are determined by indentation methods. Measurements of micro-hardness of each sample are carried out using a Wilson Hardness Vickers 432 SVD equipment using HV 0.3 kg. of load and a diamond indenter. The stress-strain curves will be obtained using Tabor´s method described for coating applications in (Choi et. al). The coatings will be indented in the cross section using a spherical indenter of 1/16 of an inch in diameter at loads of 3, 5, 10, 20 and 30 Kg: using the same instrument. The phases and features of the images are identified through Python codification based on its gray scale map. A mask and a binary opening are carried out. Activities: The main objective of this project is to develop an image analysis procedure using control vision and machine learning to identify key features on WC-Co coating microstructures by HVOF. The processed images will be used to predict mechanical properties by the finite element method. The comparison of the property prediction and the actual experimental measurements will assess the quality of the method of image analysis. The student will be part of a broader team of experts. To measure mechanical properties by indentation methods. To prepare samples by polishing methods. To conduct image analysis to identify phases: carbides, binder; and, pores and cracks, To model hardness measurement via the Finite Element Method FEM using ABAQUS onto the OOF processed images (desired). | 450 USD Monthly | 6.0 daily, 30.0 weekly | UNIVERSIDAD SAN FRANCISCO DE QUITO | CUMBAYA | https://www.usfq.edu.ec/es | IAESTE ECUADOR | 450 USD Monthly | 250 USD Monthly | As a student you will be enrolled at San Francisco de Quito University , therefore your legal status in Ecuador will be as a student doing a cultural exchange program , in order to complete your studies. The different growth and lithography parameters will be studied in order to develop high aspect ratio micro-structures. The fabricated devices will be measured mainly by atomic force and secondary electron- microscopies and by photoluminescence measurement. In this project, we want to develop new integrated materials on Si substrate made by Pulsed Laser Deposition and liftoff processing. PLD is a high quality growth technique commonly used for many applications in photonics which can provide for instance low loss waveguides grown at room temperature. In PLD, an intense pulsed laser beam is focused through an optical window on a solid or liquid target under vacuum. If the target absorbs enough energy, the laser-material interaction leads to the formation of a plasma consisting of partially ionized species directed perpendicularly to the target surface, which can deposit on the substrate facing the target. It has the advantage that the molecules reaching the surface have an energy which can exceed the thermal energy which allows to envision lift-off processing for a fast integration. Recently, we have shown that rare earth doped waveguides and grattings can be made by combining PLD and liftoff processing. Such results are extremely promising since they open a way to new materials integration on Si platform. However, we want now to optimize the material and processing to improve the device resolution for practical applications. | 630 EUR Monthly | 7.0 daily, 35.0 weekly | Institut Lumière Matière Lyon I | Villeurbanne | Trainee with help of IAESTE | 500 EUR Monthly | 500 EUR Monthly | - Please don't forget the enrollment certificate in the nomination, with a precise end date of the certificate (Month + Year) which should be later than the desired end date of internship. - Each student can ask for a financial help for accommodation of 90-130 € to the French administration (APL from CAF). - You can get in touch with your school if you are eligible to any Erasmus funding or other grants (from 410€ to 690€). Single-use plastics have contaminated soil and water, causing immense damage to farming land and other viable places. Over time these single plastics get degraded into microplastics which are known to harm the environment, marine life, seawater, and sediments. To overcome these negative effects targeting the significant constituents of single-use plastic PET was more effective. Further PET traces in humans were known to affect the regulation of estrogen levels in the human endocrine system. PET is broken down using a novel enzyme PETase which belongs to the esterase class of enzymes. PETase can degrade PET due to the presence of disulfide bonds which help bind to PET. Hydrolysis breaks PET into monomeric mono-2-hydroxyethyl terephthalate (MHET), further broken into ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. Wherein ethylene glycol gets converted into acetate, which will then enter the TCA cycle, and terephthalic acid gets converted into protocatechuate, metabolized in the beta-ketoadipate pathway. This research aims to delve into the degradation mechanism of PET using samples obtained from waste disposal sites. Further we also aim to advance our knowledge about the bacteria capable of degrading PET and, at the same time, contribute to the advancement of a sustainable environment. Outcomes of the Project: Biodegradation of PET to reduce its adverse effects on the environment. Evaluation of Fermentation kinetic parameters for an enhanced PETase production for further scale-up process.
